Vellore Fort
Vellore Fort is a large 16th-century fort situated in Vellore city near Chennai, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The Fort was at one point of time the head quarters of the Vijayanagara Empire. The fort is known for its grand ramparts, wide moat and robust masonry. The Fort’s ownership passed from Vijayanagara Kings, to the Bijapur Sultans, to Marathas, to the Carnatic Nawabs and finally to the British, who held the fort until India gained independence.
The Fort was built around 1566 by Chinna Bommi Nayak and Thimma Reddy Nayak, subordinate Chieftains under Sadasiva Raya of the Vijayanagara Empire. The name Vellore is also spelt “Belur.” The present day Chennai region and Tirupathi were under the domain of the Fort. The fort was constructed in granite from the nearby quarries in Arcot and Chittor districts. It spreads over an area of 133 acres and is located at an altitude of 220m within a broken mountain range. The fort is surrounded by a moat which was once used as an additional line of defence in the case of an invasion. It includes an escape tunnel leading to Virinjipuram about 12 km away.
Jalakandeswarar Temple
The Jalakandeswarar Temple is situated inside the Vellore Fort and has a majestic Gopuram (tower). Here Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of “Jalakandeswarar”. The temple is located at sub-ground levels below the temple moat – hence the name Jalakandeswarar. The temple was closed for a very long period. The main effigy of the deity of the sanctum sanctorium was taken away to a distant location to save him from being dishonoured by an appraisal. It was brought back amd put in place in 1980 when there was a severe water scarcity. The then Collector was key in getting the deity back to its location.
Jalakanteswarar or “Siva residing in the water” temple entrance is topped with a fine gopuram with massive wooden gates and studded with bosses of iron like lotus flowers. The best sculpture is found on the left side of the entrance, a porch which contains monolithic pillars of grandeur and delicacy of execution. The temple is adorned with some remarkable sculptures. Walls have been built between its piers and white wash and fittings have reduced it to the condition which we thought appropriate to the noblest works of India.
Yelagiri Lake
This picturesque lake is one of the most popular destinations in Yelagiri. One can take a short walk along the lake side and also enjoy a boat ride. The park located near the lake is an ideal place for taking your kids. However, picnicking is not allowed within the premises of the park. A short distance away, on the other side of the hill, is Jalagambarai falls. The murmuring Attaru Rives flows through the Yelagiri Hills, and plummets down to form a highly captivating waterfall. It’s an hour, 5 km, walk from Yelagiri downhill. Swami malai hills are the hills in the form of cake with a strong base at the bottom and high peak of the hills just tend to touch the sky.
Besides, the park, artificial waterfalls, botanical garden, lake, boathouse and musical fountain at the hills would also attract more tourists. Lot of demands had been put forth for developing the Yelagiri Hills in a major way. People from the middle and low-income groups would prefer visiting places like the Yelagiri Hills.
Yelagiri Hills
The Yelagiri hill station is not as developed as the other hill stations in Tamil Nadu like Ooty or Kodaikanal. However, the district administration has now taken up the task of developing Yelagiri Hills into a tourist destination by promoting the adventure sports such as paragliding and rock climbing.
