One-Day Chennai Tour

One Day Chennai Tour

Arrival at MGR Central
I arrived Chennai at 9:00 AM for one day full of excitement and my heart ready to soak in Chennai’s soul. MGR Central is a beautiful blend of history and energy—it sets the mood instantly.
Tips: Use the prepaid taxi or Uber for a smooth start.

Government Museum, Egmore
Just 2.2 km from Central, I took an auto for about ₹60 and reached in no time. Spent a fulfilling hour exploring the museum, starting my day at 9:30 AM with some quiet inspiration. The Indo-Saracenic architecture is a visual treat, and the collections inside—like the bronze gallery, Amaravati sculptures, and ancient Tamil artifacts—make this place a haven for history buffs and architecture enthusiasts.
Don’t miss the circular reading room—it’s peaceful, photogenic, and perfect for a quiet moment.
Route: Egmore → Nungambakkam (4.5 km)
Mode: Uber (~₹110)

Valluvar Kottam, Nungambakkam
At 10:45 AM, I reached Valluvar Kottam. It was a visual and spiritual experience. The monument, shaped like a giant stone chariot, is a beautiful tribute to the Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar. His wise words are carved all around—each couplet offering deep meaning in just two lines.
I wrote down one of my favorite verses in my notebook. It stayed with me the entire day.
Time Spent: 30 mins
Route: Nungambakkam → Triplicane (6.5 km)
Mode: Auto (~₹100)

Lunch at Ratna Café, Triplicane
Experience
: 12:00 PM – South Indian heaven! Their famous sambar-soaked idlis and crispy dosas are legendary. I also had curd rice with pickle—it was the comfort food I didn’t know I needed.
Ended with a strong filter coffee—the kind that keeps you going for hours.
Route: Triplicane → Mylapore (4 km)
Mode: Uber (~₹100)

Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Mylapore
At 1:30 PM, even with the afternoon heat, the temple had a peaceful and divine atmosphere. The colorful gopuram (tower), the quiet temple tank, and the devotion in the air made it feel like time had slowed down.
I sat under a tree near the tank, watching devotees in traditional clothes performing rituals. I also bought some flowers and offered them inside the temple—it made the visit feel personal and meaningful.
Time Spent: 45 mins
Route: Mylapore → Santhome (2.2 km)
Mode: Short auto ride or 20-min walk

Santhome Basilica
Time Spent:
30 mins
At 2:30 PM, I visited Santhome Cathedral Basilica, built over the tomb of St. Thomas the Apostle. The place holds deep historical and spiritual significance. The cool, quiet interiors offered a peaceful break from the day.
It’s a beautiful spot, and a must-visit for anyone interested in Chennai’s religious and cultural diversity.

Marina Beach (Walk from Santhome or Auto)
Experience
: 3:30 PM – The iconic stretch of Marina Beach offered sun, waves, and street snacks. I strolled along the sand, clicked a selfie at the Gandhi statue, and tried spicy mango slices and roasted peanuts from beachside vendors.
Memory Moment: A group of kids asked me to join a kite-flying race. I didn’t win, but I laughed like I hadn’t in a while.
Time Spent: 1 hour
Route: Marina → Besant Nagar (7.5 km)
Mode: Uber (~₹150)

Sunset at Elliot’s Beach, Besant Nagar
Time Spent
: 1.5 hours
Experience: 5:00 PM – Compared to Marina, Elliot’s Beach is serene and clean. I watched the sun dip behind the Karl Schmidt Memorial while sipping on rose milk. The wind was salty, but my mood was sweet.
This was my favorite stop—calm, photogenic, and full of local life.

Dinner at Murugan Idli Shop (Besant Nagar)
Time Spent:
45 mins
Meal: Ghee podi idli, butter dosa, sweet pongal, coffee
Cost: ₹250
Experience: 6:45 PM – Simple, iconic, and always delicious. Murugan never disappoints. The chutneys are endless and the coffee is a power-up.

Return to MGR CentralRoute: Besant Nagar → MGR Central (12 km) at 8:00 PM
Mode
: Uber (~₹280)
Time: ~45 mins
Experience: With a full heart and a phone full of photos, I made my way back. If you’re catching a late train or staying the night, this is the perfect point to wind down.
